Who goes to Fashion Week?
When you think of Fashion Week, you think of huge amounts of people running (translate: being chauffer driven) madly around the city from one show to the next. You think of wildly large groups of photographers surrounding the entrances of the venues with the sounds of their clicking cameras filling the air. You think of a sea of bumper to bumper European shiny black cars with opaque tinted windows. You think Vogue, Harpers, Vanity Fair, Elle. My point here being, that you think of a lot of chaotic madness and a lot of people. But who are all these people? Well these people can be broken down into a few very clear cut groups…
The Legitimates
These are the magazine editors, stylists and influential people who genuinely attend shows as it is a key part of their job. This group are the real deal, the legitimate ‘Fash Pack’. They are serious, restrained, classic & sophisticated. This group smile politely as they swiftly glide by the photographers, never stopping for too long. See example subjects, Emmanuelle Alt, Geraldine Saglio, Virginie Mouzat, Natalie Massanet and Franca Sozani.
The Icons
This group is the other half of the fash pack, comprising of those who challenge tradition and embrace eccentricity but still attend the shows as it is a vital part of their job. These peeps wear colour and are usually wearing couture straight off the runway, meaning that naturally, the photographers mob them upon their arrival. This doesn’t phase the Icons, as they will happily pose for a few pics. They see the fun in fashion and have always done so, long before fashion personalities became objects of photographers & bloggers fascination. This is the most sought after group for photographers. See Viviana Volpicella, Anna Dello Russo, Miroslava Duma, Giovanna Battaglia, Carine Roitfeld & Barbara Martelo.
The Bloggers
This is the new cut of fashionistas, those who have rose to fame through their ability to not only style themselves (originally in high street attire) but to also take interesting editorial inspired photographs of themselves and then share with the world through their home made blog. This group now only wears the most sought after street pieces of the time (i.e. currently the Kenzo Jumper, Givenchy Rottweiler Tee, Isabel Marant western boots etc.) and tend to be real world looking types, which in conjunction with the personalization of their blog, makes them appear more accessible and thus more popular. These people adore the photographers and their unique style grabs the attention of the mobs. See Hanneli (Hanneli), Susie (Style Bubble), Candice Lake (Candicelake.com), Leandra Medine (Man Repeller) & Rumi Neely (Fashiontoast)
The Girls
This group know they will be photographed and dress accordingly. They are at the top of the ‘cool girl’ food chain and stick to variations of the same style recipe, which usually includes elements such as boyfriend jeans, beanies, leather jackets, skinny jeans, converse, tees (Celine, Rodarte, Givenchy, Homies, Philo) black heels and leather pants. This group is a mix of bloggers, stylists, it girls and minor celebrities. They pout for the flashes and carry Chanel or Celine and are usually invited to be seen at the shows. See high end ‘Girls’ Columbine Smillie & Elin Kling first up.
The Quiet Achievers
This is the group of publicly (slightly) lesser known fashionistas (unless you’re in the fash world, then these ladies are right up there) who are fashion editors, senior designers, stylists and buyers amongst other things. These guys exude humility and seem to have a common level of quirkiness attached to their style. It’s this difference along with their warm inviting smiley faces that attracts the photographers. This group enjoys the shows and attends with a seemingly calm exterior however are serious players in the fashion world, preferring to keep their ‘celeb’ factor on the lower side. Like the Legitimates and the Icons, they are there for their job. See Natalie Joos, Elisa Nalin and Julia Sarr Jamois, Taylor Tomassi Hill, Yasmin Sewell & Caroline Seiber.

Losing my way
As someone who openly loves clothes, accessories, styling and everything involved with fashion, you can probably imagine my shock at realising that I possibly dont know my own personal style. Shock horror, I know (maybe slightly dramatic) but before those of you who are my friends say ‘no no, dan you definitely know your own style, its ugly gold, white and orange Eurotrash’ (which it is) What I actually really mean, is that I’m pretty certain ‘my style’ gets lost and confused with what I think I like, far too easily these days.
Ive got a few ideas as to why this is. Firstly, I work in fashion and without a doubt wherever I work strongly influences my style of the time. Secondly, perusing blogs everyday keeps my list of things to buy, consistently full. But heres the thing, do I really genuinely want half the things on my list? Um, I dont know. So if I dont know, then why do I want them? Because Ive seen someone wandering the streets of Milan being snapped wearing them? or because one of my fav bloggers has just picked it up at Zara and has shown me through the wonder that is Instagram… Probably all of the above, which is kinda shallow and kinda annoying by me, as obviously Im ridiculously easy to influence. Admittedly this is not new information to me, Ive always known I’m an advertisers dream.
Take yesterday for example. After breakfast with one of my beautiful best friends Leah, we wandered to General Pants as she wanted to pick up one of Dan Single’s new Animaals tee’s (which on a side note, have obviously taken strong influence from the Les Plus Dores designer tees) So as we walked there, I explained to her that while I liked the tee, I just feel like it’s one of those things everyone will have, thanks to resident babes Pip Edwards and Bambi Northwood Blythe sporting their’s all around MBFWA. Im not keen on things that are grossly overdone and worn only because it’s ‘the thing’ to be seen in (i.e.Kenzo jumper). In saying this, I do have & love my Isabel Marant high tops, so I guess you could call me a hypocrite. But I suppose in a weird way, thats the point to my story, as along with my baben friend, I also, walked out of General Pants with one of these aforementioned tees. Before you say anything, I know…. Then I instagrammed it. Wow.
So what exactly happened between me explaining my thoughts on this t shirt & then actually physically viewing/touching/trying on the tee, I dont know, but what I can tell you, is that in the moment, I completely lost all sense of my prior opinion and felt the need to conform. Now thats concerning for a number of reasons, but lets skip over most of those for now, and let me now just ask myself, honestly, what do I like and if I could, what would I genuinely want to wear these days? Here’s what I came up with:
So here’s my board of wishful thinking, and surprisingly it’s fairly mundane. In a good way though, Im looking a bit classic with a bit of colour, which I kind of knew I would be. So anyway, what I do know now, is that I now need to try a hell of a lot harder not to give in to a fad or an ingenuine influence, so I have decided to opt for a simple strategy when shopping both mentally and physically – “If Emmanuelle Alt was here, what would she buy” surely I cant go wrong with that…
